    Cannot edit a gif file in Photoshop

    I came across a problem where I was looking to manipulate a GIF (Graphic Interchange Format) image using Photoshop. To my horror I realized I could not edit the gif file because I could not add or edit any layer which was confusing. Ofcourse I had the option to change the gif fromat to jpeg but then that would be a round about way of doing things. Professionally I would not be satisfied with the result if I used that method.

    How to edit GIF in Photoshop


    If you are having the same problem then the GIF file you have is in “Indexed Color”. You can find this out by going to “Image” menu and go to the “mode” option. If the image is in “indexed color” mode change it to “RGB” mode and voila your file becomes editable and you can add layers of blending effects!

    Adobe’s software is rather expensive. The problem is that photoshop has become an industry standard and it is very difficult for businesses to migrate to alternatives.

    What is worst is that Adobe sells the package of 7 applications which costs Rs.100,000 (about $225 US) whereas if you want to buy Photoshop alone it costs about Rs. 70,000 (about $150 US) which is lower that the price in US which is $699 but still very steep by Indian standard. Going by the price of the bundled software the price for a standalone application is ridiculous.
