What is it with App Sumo

What is it with AppSumo? Their advertisements are all over the place on the Internet. Seems like they have a tonne of money. Any insights? I did click on one such advertisement as I believe App Sumo is SAAS (Software As A Service) but I’m not too sure. I will look it up again - seems like the advertisement is working for me!

Download websites for offline viewing

Media_httpwwwhttrackc_dnfif

I’m sure you have come across websites which have valuable information and you wish the content was available offline. This is possible. I have been using HTTrack for more than 7 years and it has never failed me. It is a free software and you can download HTTrack here

Why review HTTrack now?

One of the reasons I wanted to share this information was that I was delighted to see that a new version HTTrack (3.44-1) has been released in February 2011. There are many applications which I adore but they have been abandoned by the developers but this is a piece of code that has not been abandoned and it is great.

Features of HTTrack

  • You can download the local directory and HTTrack builds recursively all directories, getting HTML, images, and other files from the server to your computer

  • Once you have downloaded the site you can update it whenever you feel more content has been added to the website

  • Pause and résumé while archiving the website is possible

  • You can set the depth of the website to be archived. For example if you want the pages from a certain domain to be backed up only you can define that.

  • There is another similar software Backstreet which seems interesting which I’m going to try.

A gopd startup page for your browser - Two Hub

    Media_httpwwwtwohubco_bapcq

One of the cool services that I have come across is Two Hub where you can signup and create a start page with the ability to see 6 of your favorite sites on one page. You can visit the sites bookmarked by clicking on the screenshots of the websites. The screenshots are generated automatically.

    How does two hub work

    • Create a new hub on Two hub which is simple process which involves sharing your email adddress and deciding a password for the account

    • Once you are logged in log into your account and click on th edit option on the top right of the screen

    • You will be able to set 6 most important bookmarks with instant preview

    • You can export the bookmarks at any point of time

    • TTabulate - Chrome extension for bookmarking all open tabs

      Media_httpfastcachega_zfewp

It often happens with me, specially when I’m checking mail that I drift away from the real stuff and open up multiple tabs to access information that has been shared with me in the emails. After some time I feel guilty about my falling productivity and that is when I get stuck.

Ideally I would want to read the open tabs later when I have time therefore I bookmark them using my favorite social bookmarking site Delicious(thank you Chad Hurley and Steve Chen for keeping Delicious alive) with special tags like “readlater” or “todo”. As I mentioned very rarely I get back to those bookmarks I have made with the special tags.

Another irritating habit of mine is that I have the tabs open over multiple sessions extending days. Therefore a page that I have found interesting would be open for multiple days eating away the resources of the computer.

      Solution to bookmark multiple tabs

Since I have moved to Chrome for my major browsing I was looking for a Chrome extension that would help me bookmark the open tabs and I can refer to them later. That is when I found Tabulate which bookmarks all the open tabs and creates one URL which you can use to access all the tabs in one go. This seems to be a pretty neat solution. I will give it a whirl over the next few days and see how it goes.

If someone has a better solution please share.

      Internet usage statistics

HTTP Archive is an interesting website providing information on how the Internet is being used or consumed and some great insights which can help web developers and web designers. The statistics are updated every fortnight and you can compare the trends to understand the technologies and type of content being consumed.

      Internet usage Trends

pie chart of image formats being used on the Internet as of March 2011pie chart showing how many average pages have redirects implemented

    • On an average page 450kb of data is images.
    • In case of response size Flash takes up most of the data which is 58kb.
    • The most popular JavaScript is Google Analytics (62% of total usage) and the second Jquery is second which is used by 42% of the websites.
    • Only 12% of all the pages included in the scope of study use Google API.
    • 47% of the total web pages use Flash
    • Out of all the images JPEG format is the most commonly used format with 43% of the images being JPEG formats. It was heartening to note that PNG format’s share is 18% considering that it is the new format of images being used.
    • A surprizing statistics is that 28% of the pages return some kind of error. This means 28% of the net is not functional!
    • 61% of the pages have redirects which was surprizing. I hope most of them are doing SEO friendly redirects.
    • These are interesting statistics and I plan to build an infographic about the consumption of the Internet from these statistics.
