When you are travelling or you are based outside of US when you type the url http://www.google.com you are taken to the local version of Google. For example if you are in Brazil and type http://www.google.com in a browser you are taken to http://www.google.com.br which you might not want as you want to see what is popular across the Internet and not what is popular in Brazil.
Solution for using Google.com as default Google page
The good thing there is cure for this problem. All you need to do is go to http://www.google.com/ncr and you will be taken to Google.com. Does this mean that you will have to type in the URL http://www.google.com/ncr every time you want to visit Google.com. The answer is no. Once you use http://www.google.com/ncr a cookie (yum!) is set in your browser which takes you to Google.com when you put in the URL http://www.google.com.
This trick is very helpful for Search Engine Professionals and Social Media Marketing professionals as they can measure the progress of the ranking of the website they are working on across the world.
